An Ode to Project SMURF

We are all involved in a project,
With a title that's known as SMURF,
It's all about urban rivers
Discussing their value and worth.

There are differing thoughts and ideas
When expressing our hopes and our fears,
But we all have the one thing in common,
To improve things in forthcoming years.

We would like to see rivers meander,
Not flow in a channel that's straight,
And convince all the experts and planners,
Before it becomes too late!

Control of a river is vital
As flooding can cause so much pain,
But try not to use too much concrete -
Find more friendly restraints once again.

Now litter is always a problem,
And everyone thinks it's a shame,
We grumble and say, please take it away -
But really it's people to blame!

We all love the flora and fauna
And natural habitats too,
So lets have some places to sit and relax
And watch what the wildlife can do.

Now we must try to keep Chris, the Ranger
And ensure that he's going to stay,
For hopefully he'll teach the children
To enjoy and respect Nature's way.

You can walk several miles down the river
Or cycle quite near to the 'Vale',
But the most pleasing wish for Harry, would be,
To see a Rea Heritage Trail!
